The Briercrest Advantage: Master of Divinity Redesigned

Posted: May 27, 2015

Being equipped for life in vocational ministry just became a little easier. Briercrest Seminary has redesigned its Master of Divinity degree to better fit the needs of those wishing to engage in meaningful Christian ministry.

Originally designed as a professional degree composed of 30 classes, Briercrest now offers a Master of Divinity (MDiv) with flexible course categories that decrease the number of required courses to only 25. “The goal was to design a program according to what we wanted to see in our graduates: a strong biblical and historical foundation, leadership and management skills, and effective communication,” says Rev. Dr. Blayne Banting, program coordinator and instructor of Christian ministry and pastoral studies. “We wanted students to be given the flexibility to be equipped in areas that might not have been fostered by previous education.”

Briercrest Seminary’s flexible modular format had an impact on decision making as well. “We recognized that the trend was beginning to go toward a shorter program,” says Banting, who was part of the team of faculty and staff that worked tirelessly over the past year to fast-track changes to the degree. “Reducing the program length was to the advantage of our students as most choose to travel to Caronport to attend their modular classes” in order to continue in meaningful local ministries. This, in turn, fosters a rich environment where practitioners can discuss current ministry issues while being equipped for service in their local and global context.
